The Logging Horse

We maintain between 5-6 working horses in the business. We utilize them in working teams of two horses on an implement called a skidding arch. This tool provides for greater efficiency while at the same time reducing soil disturbance. We also work individual horses as singles where maneuverability and less power is required. All of our decision making regarding the use of other timber extraction machinery revolves around supporting the effectiveness of our horses.

Our horses also fulfill many other farm roles. Their versatility is often hidden when viewed just from the woodlot. They are a critical component during haying and they harvest the majority of their annual feed. We then feed this local and sustainable fuel to power harvesting wood. They also collect sap in the spring, and plow/cultivate the gardens in summer.
